Garden, Orchard, & GreenHouse Progress

The apple trees and pear trees are pretty loaded-We will have a busy canning season! We have a problem with our water - it still won't turn the sprinkler. We are blessed to have good neighbors who helped us to hook up to their water hose. Thank you Cindy and Arlin!

Ells is meditating on his next step.

He just about has it all framed for the windows.

As you can see, I am trying to get in on the act.

Bronze Medal

(He has received & wears it now)
It is true although you may not have heard it from him. Garth earned a Bronze Medal while serving in Iraq.
He hasn't received it as yet because he was in WA DC when they had their ceremonies and since has been on leave. I asked him if I could post this. It isn't anything he brags about but I wanted to share it with all of the family. I will post a picture if he will let me take one after he receives it.

Our First Potatoes

Ells finished the floor for our Greenhouse the other day. It looks great! He decided to add a pipe so we could have water so he took up the corner blocks, dug a little ditch and added the pipe. Good idea honey! Actually it isn't connected to the well as yet. Perhaps our grandsons will help us did the ditch for that.

Ellsworth and Garth are cleaning up our pump. It was 40 feet down so is quite a job to get out of the well. Garth was nice enough to come and help us - Thank You so much Garth. Ells couldn't do it alone.

I picked our first Potatoes today. They aren't real big as yet but will grow.
We will eat these tonight. Yum! New potatoes! wish we had some fresh peas to go with them.

New Garden and Farm Pics

Look at these Potatoes Grow - I am so thankful even if the corn is not doing well
(We use the chair to sit on while we water - our water pressure isn't enough to support a sprinkler right now. We have to wait for someone to have time to help us get the pump out and clean up the screen or whatever it is that is slowing it down so that the pressure will improve. In the meantime, it is time consuming plus we can't do more than one thing at a time i.e. no watering at the same time as a shower, washing a load of clothes or running the dishwasher -
life is very interesting at times)

Everything is growing except the Corn

The Cabbage looks great and the Onions and Lettuce. We are eating greens and salads and tomorrow I will either can or freeze the many greens that are ready. Please come and get some if you would like. What fun!

Peace

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”
John 14: 27

Elijah

Elijah Newell was baptized Sunday at 4pm. He was so excited.
Elijah's brothers and his cousin, Madison participated in the program.
Kesley gave a great talk and Joey and Maddy sang a very special Baptism song.
They did a very good job. Joey and Dallin gave the opening and closing prayers.
Julie gave a talk on receiving the Holy Ghost. She then presented Elijah with a nice warm comforter to remind him of the comfort the Holy Ghost brings to us.
She also gave him a compass to remind him of choosing the right way.
His Dad baptized and confirmed him. It was a very nice program.

Sad News

Aunt Carol has had a small stroke. I spoke with her today; she is in the hospital at Good Sam's in Puyallup. She will be there a few more days. They are having a hard time getting her blood pressure down.
Their family has things under control, taking over some of the care of Ralph that Carol was doing. When Carol does get home, she won't be able to drive for 6 weeks so the boys will be taking Ralph in for his appointments. It seems like when troubles come, they come in bunches.
They need everyone's prayers.

4th of July and Mom's Birthday

Today we celebrated the 4th of July in our campground with Neil and Maddy, Garth and Julie and their family, and Mom. I feel so very thankful to have been blessed to live in this great country. Because we have been so blessed I believe it is our duty to do whatever we can to help those who are not so fortunate.
Garth had Kesley lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Nathaniel offered to bless the food (he is so cute) and we played patriotic songs. We had a good time, ate too much food and played a lot of games. While the boys played croquet Julie, Mom and I played scrabble. Then Garth and Julie played against Neil and I in a game of Pictionary. G and J won. It was fun anyway. Then Neil's Family and Garth's Family went to the Tumwater Fireworks show (Eldon's Show) where I am sure they will have a great time. Ells is not up to going there anymore and I am staying home with him. I don't think I could handle the walking etc. tonight anyway.

July 2nd, we went to J.J.Norths to celebrate Mother's 92nd Birthday. (Mother has always been very patriotic so it is only right that she should be born so close to the 4th of July)
Ralph and Carol were there with five of their children: David, Jerry & his girlfriend Holly & her son, Stephie & her two boys, Shan & his daughter and Travis. It was great to see them. Our cousins, Donna Hagen and Robert Peterson were there & in addition, one of Mom's caregivers, Maryann & her husband & son. We had a nice time but ate way too much.

Misc.

Ellsworth's long lost niece and her husband came to visit today. He hasn't seen her since she was a little girl and she is in her 70s now. It was a happy reunion. They are very nice people and will be attending the Curran reunion this year. We are excited about having them here.

Wow! Yesterday it reached over 100 degrees here and it is about 90 or so today. That is warm for this neck of the woods.

Garth arrived home from WA DC last night. All went well. He didn't get to see the historic sites he would have liked to see though.

Garth and Julie and family have a good plan for getting their year's supply of food. Every month they are ordering a case of food from the the Church site. By the end of the year they should have their emergency supply. It may not be the foods everyone likes (no pizza or lasagna) but they will not go hungry in case of an emergency.

Making Changes

Arlin and Cindy are taking out the big trees - they prevent the light from reaching their yard. Neil brought home this big truck from work (yes, that is him in the bucket with a chain saw in hand )and he and Arlin took a few big branches down this evening. I think they were enjoying it.

New Greenhouse in the Making

At last we have started our new greenhouse! We dug up part of the sod and then hauled up the ashes etc. from the burn site and are packing it down on the site and leveling it out; then we will put down some tin to hopefully keep the moles and other critters out and then the flooring. We have a lot of cement blocks which we will use for the foundation. As you can see by the picture, I use the term 'we' rather loosely here. Truthfully, I have helped also and try to do whatever 'he' will let me do.

Boys and Frogs

Oh it is great to have the grandchildren around. The guys love frogs (& toads & spiders & snakes & every other little living critter)Joey & Elijah & Nathaniel spent the morning with us, mostly down by the creek looking for frogs. They found one and had great fun with it - Joey tells me it is a girl. It is great fun to have the boys come to visit, especially when the weather is nice and they can have fun outdoors. Julie and the rest of the gang took Ammon to the dentist-not so fun.
Here is a slide show with the frog & the grandchildren - and a few of Aaron & Emmylou Newell's precious children, Garrett & Gracie

Ellsworth Curran - Community Service

A week or so ago the Aberdeen Daily World contacted us and came out to the house to do an article on Ellsworth and his Community Service for the past 60+ years.
So here is a link to that article (Just click on his name above) - I managed to get my name in there also a few times; even a picture. However there are a few misprints. One big one is that it says he is one of the co-founders of the Beehive Retirement Center which, of course, is not true; we are just stockholders. We haven't figured out how they came to that deduction. The article was two full pages long. Quite a surprise.

Eldon's Job and Mom's Return

Yesterday a couple of hours after we returned from the Seattle Temple Eldon stopped by. He is soooo happy with his job. He says it is just right for him. It has a lot of variety and the really big thing is it pays 100% of his health insurance; medical, dental, and vision. Wow! That is great. He doesn't have to do too much lifting so far so that is a good thing. The boys are doing good and growing!!

Tuesday David went to the airport and picked up mother. He took her over to the Good Samaritan Hospital Rehab where my brother, Ralph is (was - he went home today) and I met them there. We had a nice meal there in Ralph's dining room area. Then mother and I went home. She had a great trip but is awfully glad to be back to her own little place. There is nothing like home.
Today I went and fixed her medicines for the week and paid her bills and a few other things. She is doing very well. She just misses seeing so many of her grandchildren that she so seldom sees.

Today was a very special day. Arlin and Cindy were going to the Temple and took me along. It was a great trip. It is so peaceful in the Temple and once you enter, you feel like all the troubles of the world have disappeared. I love that feeling. The Spirit of the Lord is so strong there you feel so close to Him who gave his life for all of us. I feel a special help from the Lord while there while meditating upon the problems I encounter in daily life. I came away with a feeling of greater strength and a more positive attitude about solutions and what I need to do to bring them about.
Garth and Julie were there also. We were able to have lunch there in the Temple with them. That was a special treat.
Garth leaves for WA DC next week. Julie will not be going along. The Army told him she could not be present at the ceremony. Garth told them he didn't want to go along if he couldn't take his wife and they said "You are going!- You are the Platoon Sergeant!" So he is going.
I have a cousin back there who retired from the Army as a Lt. Colonel and is now in the CIA. We have made contact with him and hopefully they will be in contact with each other while there.
It was a nice trip today but I am glad to be back home again.

Aaron & Emmylou Visit

Aaron had a meeting on Monday, Jun 16th in Seattle so he and Emmylou and the kids decided to make a visit over here Sunday evening and spend the night. We had a great time playing games and eating and eating and playing more games. Some of the photos are prior to the visit,

Uncle Ralph

June 25th - As most of you know, Ralph had a complete hip replacement over a week ago and is mending pretty well we think. The first surgery was not healing right - it was crooked so they decided to finally do this surgery. He should be much better off once it is completely healed.
It was quite an ordeal for him
******************************
As most of you know, my brother Ralph was in a horrible car accident yesterday morning (Sat Apr 19th) Actually it was about 1 o'clock in the morning. He was on his paper route and driving along about 60 miles an hour he said when a car came over the hill and was in his lane. He had no time to do anything; the car just hit him head on.
We are all feeling fortunate that Ralph is still with us. He was hurt quite badly with several broken bones. However, he didn't lose consciousness, which means a lot and he is trying to keep his spirits up which means a lot.
Neil kindly drove mom and I to the hospital in Tacoma yesterday and we stayed there and visited with his family until he was out of surgery and then out of the recovery room. We did get to visit with him for a while in his room. He is in a lot of pain but they have changed his pain medication now and it is helping him.

Here is his address if you would like to send him a card which I know he would enjoy receiving.

Time Goes by

This past Friday night I rode with Neil and Maddy to the Elma Football Field to watch two of our grandsons play soccer.
Jesse Burbidge (Cindy & Arlin's) played for the Elma soccer team and did a great job. Dalton Newell (Eldon & Candy's) played for Tumwater. He did a great job also but was limited on the time he could play as he was plagued with a nosebleed.
It brought back a lot of memories of past football games. Eldon, Gordon, Garth, Aaron, Josh and Dan all played football for Elma. They loved it with a passion. I loved going to the games and rooting for the boys.
How quickly time passes. It seemed so strange to be there at the football field watching my children's children play. I don't get to go very often but enjoy it when I do.
Jesse is Captain of his team and will graduate from high school this year so he doesn't have too many games left to play.
It was good to sit with the family and enjoy their company.
